I Love This Place

This is a poem I wrote on a car ride home coming back from my Lake House. I hope this poem expresses my feelings towards the Lake, and shows the elements that make the Lake special to anyone who has ever been there (even those who have only visited once).

Water ripples
under my
kayak
I love this
place

Air rushes by
my ears as
I jump
I love this
place

My cousin yells
and we run
for the trees
I love this
place

A motorboat
rushes by and we
dive into the swells
I love this
place

We rock back
and forth in the
waves
I love this
place

We all can
swim like otters
(almost)
I love this
place

I'm outnumbered
eight boys
to one girl
I love this
place

Dance, Dream

I am shaking
I am not sure if it's from
fright or
from excitement

the stage is empty
as the girls run off
our turn is up
we walk on
taking the spots
assigned to us

I am still shaking
the competition is fierce
for the first time
I'm scared to go onstage

the music starts
all of the feelings of fear
simply, disappear
the beat and rhythm
flow through my veins

I am no longer scared
of the stage
I now am the girl
in the dream

I am made of song
I am the dance
I am the dancer

Become Limitless

I
look above
to the sky
which you
cannot
see

You
look below
to the ground
which I
have never
met

I can teach you
to fly
but you have
to find your
wings

let go of
your limits
and they will
let go of
you

Touched By Rhythm

I look around the room, I can name every girl. Some of us are swaying to the rhythm of the gentle beat working its way through the room, the rest of us are singing along while stretching for some unknown reason The song that's playing is some piano, a beautiful fluid voice sings next to it.
This describes the scene on Wednesday at my dance studio. All twenty-eight of us in one room, the parents in the room next to us. As I'm sitting there I realized that these girls, me included, have been touched by... I can't exactly put it into words. The best way is probably... touched by rhythm. We have a deeper connection than I can ever hope to have with my friends outside of dance, we've worked together sense we were in kindergarten, sometimes earlier. I trust them like sisters, I don't have any actual sisters so this is closer than I ever hoped to be to actually having some. I just wasn't expecting to have twenty-seven. We know each other so well I'm surprised that I can't read their minds. Some of the girls are in other levels but we still are connected, I am the only girl who goes to GUS but I am still closer friends with them than the kids at my school. Go out in the world and try and pick out the girls (or boys) who have been touched by rhythm. They move differently like, for example, they look like they're dreaming, or dancing through life. Good Luck!!

The Stars Story

I seem to have many differences from the world around me, that only a few people truly understand me. Even they can be confused sometimes by the wonder and oddness of my psychological mind. I feel I have a unique mindset on the rest of the world. I have different ways of looking at things, such as the stars, moon, and sky. There are many legends and explanations about how the stars came about. The Eskimo's believe that on the darkest nights their dead ancestors come out to dance and the stars are the lights around the dance floor. While the Mayans believed that the Milky Way was a road to walk on to the underworld. There are many more but I like my own 'myth' I personally think that God made the sun to bright and it was making the Earth sizzle. So a few brave birds flew up to the heavens and begged God to make the sun smaller, he agreed that it should be smaller, but it wasn't possible he had already made it. One of the birds suggested that he rip the sun, and spread the pieces into the night sky. God enjoyed this idea, but he would need a volunteer to do the task. All the birds wanted to do it. But only two were chosen, the birds flew up and ripped the sun until it was half its original size. They then scattered the shreds across the sky, the largest becoming the Milky Way. As you can see the stars can give us much wonder and confusion. I hope this gives you some insperation or an idea or something.

Poetry

Throughout my blog I am going to post poems. I hope you enjoy them as much as my friends do. Most of my poems don't have titles.

Dappled light reaches its fingers
towards me
Birdsong, and the laughter and shouts
of my cousins mingle in the air
I reach out brushing the tips
of my fingers on a bush that my cousin
hides in shush don't give me away
The rich sent of the forest smoothly
hits me in the face
I pop a blueberry in my mouth
and let the gentle, familiar taste
wash over my tongue

Ha!

Kevin do you
know how irritating
I find it when you tag me?

yeah

the wind rushes by my
head
my feet fly across the ground
as my cousin chases
me across my yard

predator vs. prey
the favorite game
of my cousins
and my brothers
and I

the instant before I trip
I think
I don't like that rock
anymore

Dancing

Sorry I've been checked out for a week or so... I have been at dance camp. That was an adventure. I tend to categorize my friends in either dance, school, or random person I've met. My dance friends tend to be spazy individuals who have, at the most 2 or 3 things in common with me. (dance, who they hang out with at dance, and sometimes an odd talent). For an example: one of the girls spent maybe an hour at dance camp lip syncing to Cheetah Girls or any song we threw at her... it was the funniest thing I've seen in my resent life. My school friends on the other hand are... let's just say... a little more of a spazy as a whole, as in when we're all together they are spazes. As you can tell I sometimes have my hands full trying to keep my friends mostly sane. As we always say 'stay sane'.

Friendship

Friendship is a great thing... most people take it for granted. I for one try to make my friends laugh at least twice a day, or every time I see them. I'm switching schools this coming year. Instead of going to Triton middle school, (like a majority of my grade) I'm going to a private school called Glen Urquhart. My friends and I agreed to stay in touch, which has worked out so far. I am looking forward to next year, making new friends and keeping the old, too. I have had the same best friend sense 1st grade, and I have made friends with her twin sister, her friend and a few unique characters have  also latched on to us. For example (i won't mention names) ... is a spazy nutball who can be one of the most loving and helpful people ever, or a girl who will go around saying 'SWAN' and driving you insane (I have an idea her twin will agree). The idea is stick with your friends but don't be afraid to make new ones too.

Heritage

Blueberries. If asked to write a sentence about these at school most kids would write a simple phrase like: It is blue... They taste good... They are my favorite food... etc. Whereas my sentence would turn into a paragraph, then a essay, and possibly a story. Blueberries are as much a part of my heritage as my family. It all starts at my lake house where one of the local legends is that the blueberries can make you live longer, it then travels to the bush in front of my house and the mountain called Pitcher Mountain which is covered in their bushes. I have Irish, English, German, Scandinavian, and Dutch heritage I also have the blueberries... not to mention the herons, but I will tell you about that some other time. :)

Live For It

So as I was reading this book a few days ago, Where I'd Like to Be by Frances O'Roark Dowell, I realized that what I had just read was true about me too. I'll quote it here: '  "I always did like this road" I say out loud to Mr. Potter and Murphy. "I always liked where it took me" '. I can say the same about many roads... the road to my lake house, where I am now, or maybe the road that leads to my dance studio... it says the same. I love going to both places because I know I am going to do things I love. In the case of my lake house, kayaking, swimming, etc. But at my dance studio I simply dance, which is my lifestyle. To quote some other famous dancer... 'Dance is not a life, but a lifestyle'. (or something like that). My point is find a road that you love and it doesn't have to be an actual road it can be any thing, I live for dance and to see my little cousins, one of which is in the room with me now.

More about that later.
