Dance, Dream

I am shaking
I am not sure if it's from
fright or
from excitement

the stage is empty
as the girls run off
our turn is up
we walk on
taking the spots
assigned to us

I am still shaking
the competition is fierce
for the first time
I'm scared to go onstage

the music starts
all of the feelings of fear
simply, disappear
the beat and rhythm
flow through my veins

I am no longer scared
of the stage
I now am the girl
in the dream

I am made of song
I am the dance
I am the dancer

  1. Great poem Skylar. I think I have felt this way once or twice as a member of athletic teams I have been on. There is nothing quite like the adrenaline you get from those situations.

Congratulations on the platinum award! It is great when dreams become realities!

  2. This is very profound and beautiful. Very expressive. My daughter could not believe that a 7th grader wrote this!! My daughter shares this writer's sentiments as my daughter will soon be in a school play dancing and singing for all of us to see.

  3. Beautiful poem! I know that I and many people can relate to the feelings you express. I don't know that as many of us could express it quite so eloquently.

  4. Well done, Skylar.

Now I'm retired from permanent school teaching, I do quite a bit of filming for schools and community groups before making DVDs and CDs of their show. At every performance, you can see the excitement and nervousness before the show starts. What amazes me is how quickly child or adult takes the role they're meant to once on stage.

Your poem reminds me of so many young performers. Thank you for sharing. :)
